We put probably 150 rounds though it without a hickup. What a sweet shooting gun. I don't know why I waited so long to get me one.

So after a year or so of people telling me how great my RIA was, and the gun not living up to anything close to "great", I sold it and bought this Colt from out local Gander Mountain as a Christmas present to myself. I haven't shot it yet, but I am friends with the guy at GM that sold me the gun, and he told me that the man that owned the gun was an old timer competition shooter who had died, and his wife just wanted to get rid of the gun.

It came with an extra barrel and slide. The grip area fore and aft are stippled (or whatever you call it), but other than that I don't know how original it is. All I know is that by the serial number, it's a1950's vintage.

Our New Carry Guns

Well, the wifey and I finally got our cconcealed carry permits, so we went out and picked out or first carry guns. Though the wife already had a Ruger LCP, she never felt comfortable with it because of the strange, double action trigger pull.

So I was leaning towards the Sig P238, and I knew the local Gander Mountain had one new. We went and I discovered a used one there as well. So I got the used one, and the wife, after trying out a number of other guns, settled on the new Sig P238 that I had originally went to look at.

So here they are, two Sig Sauer P238 .380's. Mine has the stainless slide, hers is all black. We have some pink grips on order for her gun, though!

This morning we went up to the range and blasted through a box of ammo each without a problem. Can't say the same for the Ruger LCP.

Opening Deer Season of 2011 started out real well for me. Found a suitable spot that nobody was at on Public land with a good logger's road, and walked about 1/2 mile back to some old timberline trees with a high weeded/meadow grass, clearing that I could watch in a triangle formation, with a max distance of 150yds. Had just sat down on my portable hunting chair for maybe 3 to 5 minutes and I heard a faint "snap" off to my left blindside. Thought it being Squirrels starting to play, but looking through scope I saw some white movement of antlers and a nice big bruizer of a Buck. I made a quick count of antler tines to be sure he was legal. YES!! There were some far off shots that were by Hunter's, but that didn't bother this "Ole Boy". He meandered his way straight to me from a distance of 30yds tops. I put the Nikon scope which I could see the crosshairs real good at this time, even if the Sun hadn't made itself appear, on him and let him just do his thing, while I ever so gentle and slowly rise from my chair to clear the tall weeds better, to get a decent shot. Here he comes, and finally turns to give me a great side shot, but keeps on his slow walk. He stops!! All I saw at this time was a 1-1/2foot muzzle blast while keeping an eye on my quarry. He turn quickly, but weirdly, to head back into forest and I immediately racked another round into chamber and fired off another flame thrower for a just in case, but my "Victim" only went 25 feet and collapsed as the first shot had done it's job. The old Mossberg ATR100 30-06 with Federal 150gr soft point had done it's job of taking out both lungs, splitting the top portion of heart wide open, and going out the other side with a sizable bullet hole. Deer guess-weighed between 175 to 250 on the hoof. What a great day and a praise to the Great Spirit for his bounty. Had to now harness drag the deer out of woods. I put on my harness and dragged for about 1/4th mile, and a nice hunter that came in after me, saw I was struggling and lent me his game cart to get Deer back to my car/trailer. What a good Sport. For the bigger brutes, ya have to go deep in the woods. He was a nice 7 pointer and on the ground at 7AM. 3 minutes after opening season.
The Mosin was a bit much for him, but he stuck it out and finished off the 5 rounds loaded into it. it was a good day.
Here's those pics of my Savage AXIS along with a couple target. I was shooting West to East with a light gusty 5 to 10mph wind coming from the North. First larger target was size of vitamin bottle around 3" across where I did initial scope zeroing from 15yds, then backing off to 25yds doing freehand after new Weaver Grand Slam scope rings installed, with scope set on 4 power. Next I measured off 50yds, which put me at a small tree with a nice fork in it to rest stock into, and scope now turned up to 16 power and shooting at left small target to get feel and finer scope adjustments, then moving to right target, which are size of Quarters for final shooting. I didn't do any scope adjustments with this target as wind and wanting to put rifle in shooting rest on solid table, but it'll do for now, as most game's heads are 5 times larger than a Quarter anyway. Dang hard trying to hit these smaller targets, with buttstock against shoulder/forearm in fork of tree and trying to pull trigger between heartbeats while standing. I guess not bad for an Old Man---HUH?

Having a couple semi-auto 22 rifles already, I decided it was time to get a good little bolt action 22. I choose a Savage AXIS. Now this isn't your normal Savage, in that it is a combination of the model MKII, a 93, AND a Stevens thrown in. How Frankenstein is that? It starts out with a MKII action, then Savage puts on a Heavy Barrel of 21" from the model 93, along with a synthetic stock. They don't stop there, they then use a Stevens trigger, instead of the Accu-Trigger. When getting rifle home I mounted a scope, a BSA "Sweet 17" and ran a couple rounds through it at 75yds. Scope doesn't work well for this rifle, so I change it out for a Bushnell 4-16x40A/O with illuminated crosshairs AND holdover dots. Scope works very well and glass is crisp and clear. Rifle at 75yds was holding a 5shot grouping, once I found that it liked CCI 36gr Mini-Mag that I could cover with a Quarter, while using stock trigger. Very good for hunting. Took rifle back into house and got out tools and took off synthetic stock to get at trigger and trimmed off 2 coils of spring. Now I've gone from a stock 8# trigger to a 3 or 4# trigger, which is very safe, but easier to make paper shots, which now will group smaller than a dime. I had some Miller, medium scope rings to use, but I'm gonna change these out because they're windage adjustable and NOT very good, for what they make you think to believe, in that they'll bend/torque your scope tube if not very careful with installation. I'm gonna go with either, some trusted Weaver Quad-Locks or Weaver Grand Slam rings for dependability and strength, especially after the small hunt I just had. You'll also notice that I said this Savage is an AXIS. They don't show this on their Website, and all Axis models are "centerfire" models. Found out from Savage that this is because, this rifle was a speciality, "made to order" model for a large Outdoor Supply chain back East by name of Ellett Brother's(they choose name) and rifle model #0134920 and is only 1 of 300 made for 2011. Got for $200 at my local gun dealer. Savage makes claims of building some very accurate, well built rifles, and this AXIS model is no exception when set up correctly. It's a keeper.
