Help a Guy out with choice in rifle
Found 4 guns---all lever actions. 1st gun is a Western Field 30-30 model 740A-EMN. Guy wants $375, but can get for less than $300. Gun is in EXCELLENT condition. I found a couple references on it, but not about the model A-EMN reference as to who made it(Mossberg or Savage). Doesn't appear to be from Marlin, because of the trigger action when ratcheting the lever.
The 2nd and 3rd rifles are both Winchester 94 30-30's. Both a little rough on gun finish, but actions are good, and need cleaned and oiled. Guy wants $250 for either one and there is a couple differences in appearance(gun swivel/rubber shoulder pad/surface finish). Both rifles have a starting Serial number of 34xxxxxxx, so I don't know D O M.
4th gun. All I can say is WOW. It's a Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage. This gun is Superb in all aspects, but don't know if shoulder would be able to handle all that THUMPIN' at my age. Wants $450, but I'm sure I could get him down.
Well that's it, what do you all think as to what I should get if I get one? Any Pro or Cons?
Del

RE: Help a Guy out with choice in rifle
If it were me I'd go for the Western Field if I could get it down to under $300. A very, very close second would be the Savage, only because they are highly collectible, and I haven't ever heard a bad thing about them. My only thing is I don't like the looks of them, but that' s just me. The Western Field wins out on two counts for me, price, and it is a Marlin.

My only strike against the Winchesters is the top eject. Makes it tough to get a scope on there, and I always worry about taking a shell in the face... Tongue

Here's a thread that talks about the Western Field, with pictures:

Goods luck in your choice. Sucks not being able to get one of each. Cheers

I have a Winney 94 and shoot it a lot. Those Marlins are nice, though. Tough choice. Let us know how you come out.
